Van Oord continues its podcast mini-series about climate adaptation

Posted on June 8, 2021

Rotterdam, The Netherlands, 4 June 2021 – Van Oord is launching a new podcast series on climate adaptation. In January, Van Oord launched its first series to accelerate the exchange of knowledge, public-private partnerships and mobilise parties for the required finance to address the issues in front of all of us. The new series will cover climate issues facing coasts and oceans and how to accelerate action and bring solutions to those challenges.

Van Oord’s Programme Lead Rachel Terry invites 4 key figures in the fields of climate change and climate adaptation to share their vision on how to take action on the climate challenges that lie ahead.

Listen to episode #4: The Ocean is more than just fish

This episode is about the risks derived from how we treat our oceans, including the impacts of climate change. First guest is Karen Sack, President & CEO at Ocean Unite, and Co-chair of the Ocean Risk & Resilience Action Alliance. She talks about these risks, how to build resilience to help our oceans recover and the role of companies like Van Oord in collaborating and taking action.

Episode #5: Creating, implementing, and upscaling nature-based solutions

The fifth episode is about the Building with Nature approach. Henk Nieboer, director of consortium EcoShape, shares his insights on the necessity of nature-based solutions to producing societal, environmental, and economic benefits while achieving resilience. He also touches upon the role companies can and do play in nature-based solutions and the ways in which companies are putting Building with Nature into practice.

Episode #6: Mangroves, Climate Change and Building with Nature

In the sixth episode Pieter van Eijk, Programme Head Deltas and Coasts at Wetlands International, talks about the importance of mangroves ecosystems and the Building with Nature approach in terms of coastal resilience. Climate change is endangering global mangrove ecosystems and subsequentially poses a threat to coastal areas. Pieter will share some specific examples of successfully implemented solutions for working together with nature and local communities to improve coastal resilience.

Episode #7: Through Water, We can Prepare. Let’s Do It Together!

The final episode is about the effects of climate change and their connection to water. Lisa Hartog is Project Lead of the Water Action Track, a collaboration between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and the Global Centre on Adaptation. She will share what is happening in politics and programs in the Netherlands, and abroad, and share her thoughts on how to accelerate action through the collaboration of different stakeholders.

Climate Adaptation Action Plan

As part of the celebration of Van Oord’s 150th anniversary in 2018, Van Oord had the honour to host former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Christiana Figueres. She gave a powerful speech emphasizing the need for action to limit the effects of climate change, particularly for the world’s most vulnerable communities. Van Oord has responded to her call for action by developing the Climate Adaptation Action Plan. The Climate Adaptation Action Plan is meant to encourage meaningful dialogue between relevant parties and should result in solutions to create a better world for future generations.
