USACE to resume maintenance dredging at Channel Islands Harbor

Posted on October 27, 2026

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Los Angeles District, in continued partnership with the County of Ventura, is scheduled to return to Channel Islands Harbor for routine maintenance dredging operations beginning in mid-November 2026.

USACE has carried out periodic maintenance dredging at Channel Islands Harbor since the 1960s to maintain safe navigational depths and support regional coastal resilience. Seattle-based Manson Construction Company will serve as the primary contractor executing the work.

Following the fall/winter 2025 dredge cycle — during which Manson Construction completed the base cycle totaling 2.5 million cubic yards — the Corps plans to dredge between 1-1.5 million cubic yards during the upcoming cycle. Depending on sand infill within the authorized dredging, total volume could reach up to 2.5 million cubic yards.

Dredged material will be hydraulically pumped from the Channel Islands dredging template and transported approximately one mile south for direct placement onto Hueneme Beach. The placement of this beach-quality material provides vital nourishment and shoreline protection for downcoast coastal communities and infrastructure.

Dredging operations are slated to begin in mid-November 2026 and may continue through mid-March 2027. Work will proceed on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week schedule; however, the operation of heavy equipment on Silver Strand Beach will be strictly limited to between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to minimize community disturbance.

Operations may pause during major holiday periods, including Thanksgiving and the Christmas/New Year’s break. During any temporary shutdowns, a small crew will remain on site to monitor equipment, and portable generators will run to maintain continuous power to critical systems.
