The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District prepared an environmental assessment for the Bar Point Harbor Rubblemound Breakwater Repairs project in Ketchikan and is seeking public comment on the draft document.
USACE proposes to conduct maintenance and repairs on the two rubblemound breakwaters, originally constructed by the agency in 1958, that protect the harbor. Approximately 42,000 cubic yards of degraded armor and rock will be removed and repurposed to build a toe berm seaward of the detached breakwater. About 44,000 cubic yards of the new armor stone and rock will be placed on the infrastructure. The purpose of the proposed action is to repair the existing breakwaters, raising and widening the crest to protect against wave damages.
The draft report is available for review until November 22. It may be viewed on the Alaska District’s website at: http://www.poa.usace.army.mil/Library/Reports-and-Studies/. On that webpage, look under “Documents Available for Public Review” and expand the Civil Works tab. The document is located under the header for Ketchikan.
