The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District is scheduled to release the draft revised master plan and environmental assessment Oct. 30 for the Hansen Dam in the San Fernando Valley.
The public is encouraged to review the proposed changes and submit written comments during a 45-day public review period, which opens Oct. 30 and closes Dec. 13, 2026.
Developed in partnership with the Regional Planning and Environmental Center, the draft 2026 Master Plan revises the 2011 plan for the 1,461-acre project area located at the confluence of the Big and Little Tujunga washes. The document serves as a comprehensive land management blueprint with a 25-year lifespan, guiding the stewardship of natural and cultural resources to ensure the long-term sustainability of federal lands associated with the reservoir. Revisions to the plan address updated management and resource goals, ecological and demographic context, and proposed land classifications. The master plan does not alter the technical, operational or primary flood-risk management missions of the dam.
Constructed in the 1940s, the Hansen Dam multipurpose structure primarily serves to manage flood risk along the Los Angeles River watershed, while protecting vital environmental and cultural resources.
Although the district does not operate recreational facilities within the basin, the master plan establishes land classifications that support public recreational opportunities. These recreational facilities are managed entirely by local agency partners.
Reviewing the Draft
Starting Oct. 30, the public can access digital copies of the draft master plan, environmental assessment, map books detailing land classification changes, and an informational presentation at the project webpage: www.spl.usace.army.mil/Missions/Asset-Management/Hansen-Dam.
How to Submit Comments
Comments must be submitted in writing by Dec. 13, 2026, and can be sent via email or physical mail. USACE will accept written comments in any standard format (such as an email message or a physical letter). Please clearly specify “Hansen Dam Master Plan” in your submission.
