Unions threaten legal action over Durban port privatisation

Posted on August 21, 2023

Transport unions SATAWU and UNTU have threatened to take legal action over the decision to bring on a private sector partner to develop and run Durban’s flagship container terminal.

The Philippines’ International Container Terminal Services was selected as the preferred bidder for the joint venture over the next 25 years.

But SATAWU’s Amanda Tshemese has described the move as an insult to workers and collective bargaining.

She says they want Public Enterprise Minster Pravin Gordhan to reverse the decision.

“We are more than ready to shut down all the port terminals in this country until the decision is reversed.

“If we allow them to go ahead, they are going to sell Ngqura in the Eastern Cape as well, and we are likely to see thousands of employees at Transnet losing their jobs. Management must stop misleading and lying to the public. They are not honest in everything they are saying.”
