Turbine installation has begun at a 950MW offshore wind farm in the UK following the arrival of an installation vessel key to this phase of construction.

Chartered by MHI Vestas from Fred. Olsen Windcarrier, the Bold Tern arrived at the Port of Nigg in the Moray Firth on 6 January to commence the installation of turbines at the Moray East offshore wind farm. Located around 22km off the coast of Aberdeen, the wind farm is being developed by Moray Offshore Windfarm East Ltd (MOWEL), which is a joint venture company owned by Diamond Green Limited (33.4%), EDPR (33.3 %), ENGIE (23.3%) and CTG (10%).

Moray East Project Director, Marcel Sunier, said: “Following the safe and successful installation of all of the foundations last year, the arrival of the’ installation vessel “Bold Tern” in the Moray Firth marks a new and exciting phase for the project.”

Tern turbine challenge

The Bold Tern will be used to install one hundred V164-9.5MW turbines on top of the jackets (three-legged steel foundations) which have already been installed in the Moray Firth. The turbine components (including blades, towers and nacelles) are being marshalled at local quayside facilities in the Moray Firth, the entire project being constructed from local port facilities.

Mr Sunier added: “The wind turbine components are marshalled on the quayside then loaded on to the installation vessel, which then sails to each turbine site where there is a jacket, already installed in the Firth. The tower is assembled on the jacket, the nacelle being put on top and the blades are then mounted.  All of this demands considerable precision, skill and planning, manipulating, with great accuracy, massive components at height in the challenging conditions of the Moray Firth.”
