TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) -The city of Tybee Island has reopened the 2nd Street and 19th Street crossovers ahead of beach season.
The crossovers had been closed most of last year due to severe erosion creating dangerously steep drop-offs from the top of the dune system onto the beach. At 2nd Street, the city cut back the crossover twice, then installed Mobi mats in an attempt to keep the access open.
Both locations have experienced recent sand accretion, moving the sand, which made the crossover landings safe again.
The city said it does not know how long the crossovers will remain open. The reopening comes after a federal decision not to fund beach nourishment this season.
The 19th Street crossover offers significant south-end parking. The city says the Department of Public Works has been working with the DNR on a plan to modify the subsurface mat at 19th Street and reposition sand to allow the city to reopen the vehicular access, which was also closed last year.
