The Panama Canal and the Port of Houston Renew a Strategic Cooperation Agreement

Posted on July 13, 2026

The Panama Canal and the Port of Houston renewed their Mutual Cooperation Agreement, signed originally in 2003, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening commercial exchange and promoting the Panama Canal’s strategic maritime route.

The renewal of this agreement highlights the shared interest in boosting trade and underscores the Canal’s value as a global logistics hub. The understanding emphasizes the benefits that the interoceanic waterway offers U.S. Gulf Coast exports, particularly those moving through the Port of Houston. Currently, cargo originating from, or destined for Houston, accounts for approximately 18% of all cargo transiting the Canal.

The renewal of this agreement reflects the strategic relevance of continued collaboration between the Panama Canal and the Port of Houston, ensuring that both institutions remain at the forefront of maritime trade and global connectivity.
