The Tata Group is set to make a significant move into India’s shipbuilding industry with a proposal to invest Rs 10,000 crore in a new facility in Kerala. According to a Bloomberg report, the state government is currently evaluating this proposal, which, if approved, would mark the conglomerate’s entry into a sector that has become a strategic priority for the country.
Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan confirmed that Tata has approached the state with the investment proposal and indicated government support for the project. “Tata is ready to invest in shipbuilding,” he stated, adding, “We are going to provide the land.” The Chief Minister noted that the proposal is under active consideration and could receive formal approval within the next month.
This venture would diversify the Tata Group’s extensive business portfolio, which includes automobiles, steel, consumer products, electronics, and hospitality. Entering the shipbuilding sector would align with the Indian government’s efforts to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities and enhance the country’s presence in global maritime trade.
The state aims to build an integrated ecosystem around its ports by encouraging investments in shipbuilding, ship repair, and related marine industries.
