The Surf City Town Council has approved an immediate sand replacement project to address storm-induced beach erosion.

On April 2, the council was presented with a budget ordinance amendment to repair dunes that were damaged by recent tidal events, according to a Friday press release from the town. Dune escarpment has increased vulnerability and impacted access.

The council swiftly approved the amendment, and the project was scheduled to begin Monday. The truck haul will bring in approximately 5,000 cubic yards of sand to the oceanfront, generally between the 900 to 1100 blocks of South Shore Drive in Surf City.

The project will be completed by May 1, according to the release, and will be utilizing dump trucks that will need to access the beach at the Kinston Avenue access, Access #19. From there, they will travel along the beach to the affected area, which will require the closure of beach accesses #19, #20, #21, #22, #23 and #24.

Residents and visitors are asked to exercise caution and avoid this area to allow for the work to be completed. As soon as the project is complete, accesses will be reopened.

“We’re thankful for the quick response and turnaround to get this project completed within the environmental window and before our major tourist season,” said Surf City Mayor Teresa Batts in the release. “The town continues to look forward to its beach nourishment project with the US Army Corps of Engineers to begin in December 2025. This minor truck haul will hopefully provide the stabilization necessary to maintain a healthy dune system.”

Surf City residents are advised to stay updated on any changes and closures related to the beach replenishment project. For more information, visit the official Surf City website at www.surfcitync.gov/beach or contact town hall at 910-328-4131.
