Sumitomo Electric Opens UK’s First HVDC Subsea Cable Factory at Scotland’s Port of Nigg

Posted on October 21, 2026

Congratulations to Sumitomo Electric Industries on the opening of their new HVDC subsea cable manufacturing facility at Port of Nigg, Scotland! The facility represents an important investment in the infrastructure needed to connect offshore renewable energy to consumers and strengthen energy security.

We were delighted to be part of this milestone and to welcome guests on board our cable-laying vessel Nexus during the opening celebrations. The vessel tour provided an opportunity to showcase the offshore installation expertise required to deliver the next generation of HVDC transmission projects.

At Van Oord, we are proud to be a partner of Sumitomo Electric Industries in developing and delivering critical offshore transmission infrastructure. Together, we help create the foundations for a resilient, low-carbon energy system.

The opening of this facility comes at an important moment in our collaboration. Following the recent long-term framework agreement signed by SSEN Transmission and the Sumitomo Electric and Van Oord consortium, we look forward to working together to deliver the HVDC subsea cable systems needed to strengthen Scotland’s electricity network and support the UK’s energy transition.
