Now that dredging of the St. Lucie Inlet has begun contractors will soon begin hauling the estimated 480,000 cubic yards of dredged up sand to St. Lucie County beaches.

As a result the County has issued an advisory to boaters urging caution because floating pipes will be placed in the water offshore. The beach restoration project will take place from March 15 through May 15 along the 3.3 miles of coastline from Normandy Beach to the Martin County line.

The pumping of sand onto the beach isn’t expected to begin until March 26, but residents should be aware that land surveying and small seismic recording units that create minor vibrations are being temporarily placed in or around condominiums. Additionally, heavy equipment will be staged in a private, vacant lot, just north of Shuckers at 9750 S. Ocean Drive.

This is a federally-approved renourishment project. It is expected to be completed before April 30.

All sea turtle nests laid within the proposed project area will be relocated outside of the project by a qualified environmental consultant (Ecological Associates, Inc.) approved by the state. Sea turtle monitoring will take place daily within the proposed construction template.

Questions about the South Hutchinson Island renourishment project should be directed to St. Lucie County’s Senior Coastal Engineer Josh Revord at 772-462-1269 or Revordjo@stlucieco.org.
