The Virgin Islands Port Authority is advancing a $22.4m upgrade of the Wilfred “Bomba” Allick Marine Terminal in St. Croix, with the project currently in the design phase ahead of construction.
The scheme covers large-scale structural repairs to the marine terminal, replacement of deteriorated mooring and fendering equipment, and extensive pavement reconstruction across the container yard.
Funding was awarded to VIPA through the US Maritime Administration’s Port Infrastructure Development Program in 2023.
The authority said the works are intended to improve the safety, reliability and operational efficiency of the facility and support continued cargo movements through St. Croix.
VIPA will hold a public meeting on August 14 to present the planned improvements, current design status and environmental review. Engineering project manager Tafari Nelson and representatives of Moffatt & Nichol are due to outline the project, while environmental consultant BioImpact will present the findings of the project review.
The Wilfred “Bomba” Allick Marine Terminal is St. Croix’s principal container facility and forms a key part of the US Virgin Islands’ cargo network.
