Skyborn wins exclusive development rights for Finnish offshore wind farm

Posted on July 10, 2023

Skyborn, a portfolio company of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), and state-owned Metsähallitus have entered into a reservation agreement, granting five years of exclusive rights to develop a 2 GW offshore wind farm in Finland.

Development work on the project called Pooki is scheduled to start as early as August 2023. The wind farm is planned to be situated in the pristine waters of the Bothnian Bay in Finnish territory, 25 km from the shore and once constructed it should have around 100 wind turbines.

Skyborn has developed a total of six offshore wind projects across Germany, Taiwan and France with a combined capacity of more than 2 GW, which are currently in operation or under construction. GIP acquired the Bremen-based developer from Wpd for an undisclosed sum and rebranded it last year. The company is also backed by Abu Dhabi state investor Mubadala and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and is working on a pipeline of more than 30 GW in various stages of development in Europe and Asia-Pacific.

“It is a significant milestone for Skyborn and reinforces our confidence in the potential of offshore wind in Finland. Working alongside Metsähallitus, we are excited with this opportunity to participate in Finland’s transition towards a renewable future,” said Thomas Karst, CEO of Skyborn.
