Following the award earlier this year, the OTTer® 250 dredger designed and supplied by IHC Mining has been fully assembled on-site and is now operational. Dredging works, led by Guerrini Marine Construction in close collaboration with the City of Cape Town, officially commenced in mid-June 2025.
𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞: Removal of approx. 364,000 m³ of organic sludge and fines from the bottom of the 250-hectare freshwater lake.
𝐎𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: Restore water quality and support improved wastewater treatment.
𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝: Low-impact floating suction dredging, protecting the local ecosystem and minimizing disruption to nearby residents and recreational users.
This marks the first City-led dredging operation in Zeekoevlei in over 40 years, and the first use of a floating dredger in this unique and sensitive environment.
The OTTer® system, equipped with an auger head, ensures minimal disturbance to the reserve’s delicate ecology while delivering the production capacity needed for this ambitious restoration.
To support longer pumping distances, we also installed and commissioned an OTTer® 250E booster, enabling material transport over 2.7 km to the discharge site.
