Repair underway after flood closes White Crest Beach in Wellfleet

Posted on September 17, 2026

The storm that dropped about three inches of rain on White Crest Beach in Wellfleet Sunday severely damaged the parking lot, dune and steep beach access path.

Streams of water took down signs, pieces of asphalt and carved gulleys into the dune cliff.

Repairs were scheduled to begin Tuesday, Sept. 15, and the beach is expected to reopen Saturday, Sept. 18, according to Jennifer Elsensohn, Director of Community Services for the town of Wellfleet.

White Crest Beach is one of four Atlantic-facing beaches managed by the town of Wellfleet, and part of a long stretch of oceanfront Cape Cod beaches that include the Cape Cod National Seashore. The parking lot has 186 parking spaces.

Wellfleet police continued on Tuesday to advise residents and visitors to stay away from the area because of potentially hazardous conditions.
