Region Two chair says Pomeroon River Mouth dredging ‘satisfactory’

Posted on December 20, 2023

Chairperson of Region Two Vilma De Silva has indicated that work on dredging the Pomeroon River Mouth is now “satisfactory.” This comes after she had expressed her displeasure at the manner in which the work had been ongoing.

Several weeks later, with the project restarted after several issues, De Silva related: “So, I wasn’t able to go and have a first-hand look at the operation, but based on our report, works are ongoing and it is satisfactory.”

Back in April 2022, the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) which comes under the Ministry of Agriculture, had signed a $569,300,000 contract with Gaico Construction and General Services Inc for the dredging of the mouth of the Pomeroon River.

For years, farmers from villages along the Pomeroon River have been affected by inadequate drainage due to extreme siltation at the mouth of the river. Once the project is completed, there is expected to be improved drainage on their farms, and vessels will have better access to the river during both the low and high tides.

The project aims to open up opportunities for more commerce.
