Rauma Cuts Steel On Second Spirit Of Tasmania LNG-Fuelled Ferry

Posted on December 21, 2022

Finnish shipyard Rauma Marine Constructions has begun construction of a second LNG-powered car and passenger ferry, Spirit of Tasmania 5, for the TT-Line company, Spirit of Tasmania.

The production of the first vessel began in February 2022 and its keel-laying ceremony was held in late October.  Both ferries will operate on the world’s southernmost sea route between mainland Australia and Tasmania.

The 48,000 GT vessels will feature dual fuel engines capable of using LNG. They will each be capable of carrying 1,800 passengers and they will replace two Finnish-built sister ships from the 1990s.

Spirit of Tasmania IV is slated for delivery in the first quarter of 2024, and Spirit of Tasmania V in late 2024.
