Could or should Swampscott Harbor have a breakwater?
It is a question the Harbor and Water Advisory Committee have been considering and was the subject of a presentation at the Selectmen’s meeting last week.
Jay Borkland, of consulting firm Apex Companies and a Swampscott resident said a breakwater would be a “defining structure in the town that will improve the protection of the harbor as well as the harbor itself and, I believe, make Swampscott a destination location. It will support the goals of zoning by safeguarding and preserving the nature of downtown. It will help protect the assets and history of downtown. The 2025 Master Plan mentions downtown and this dovetails with that.”
