MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – The City of Marquette is continuing work to preserve and beautify its Lake Superior shoreline.

Crews are testing rock along the shoreline on Lakeshore Boulevard near Clark Lambros Beach Park to help prevent future erosion. Plans for the project include the creation of dunes for shoreline stabilization. That project will start as early as July and contractors have 18 months to complete it.

The adjacent Dead River dredging project is on hold for fish spawning season. City officials say the purpose of that project is to relocate the mouth of the Dead River. The project began in March and must be completed by Nov. 30.

City of Marquette Engineer Mikael Kilpela says the project will help make Lake Superior more accessible.

“That’ll provide a direct outlet into Lake Superior,” Kilpela said. “It’ll help with recreational users being able to use the kayak launch and get onto Lake Superior.”
