Power2X and Advario to develop e-SAF hub in Port of Rotterdam

Posted on October 21, 2024

Since April 2023, Advario has been collaborating with Power2X to develop the 26-hectare former Aluchemie site in Rotterdam into a center for innovative energy solutions.

In the Port of Rotterdam, Power2X and Advario are creating a global hub for the production and storage of synthetic, ultra-low carbon fuels and sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF).

More than 250,000 tonnes of e-SAF, a synthetic fuel derived from green hydrogen that is not fossil fuels, may be produced annually at the Power2X production facility. With enough ultra-low carbon fuel to fully power about 7,000 flights between Amsterdam and New York each year, it will be the largest e-SAF installation ever revealed.

In addition to locally produced green hydrogen, the facility will use imported green methanol made from green hydrogen and biogenic carbon as feedstock. Green methanol will be imported from places with a lot of green hydrogen and renewable energy.

To guarantee a steady supply chain for the green molecules, Advario will construct a state-of-the-art storage and logistics facility with a capacity of about 230,000 cubic meters, backed by rail and marine infrastructure.

It is a major hub for the delivery of e-fuels and sustainable aviation fuels because of its advantageous location in the Port of Rotterdam, which provides direct access to European airports, including Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Since April 2023, Advario has been collaborating with Power2X to develop the 26-hectare former Aluchemie site in Rotterdam into a center for innovative energy solutions. The site is well-positioned for the development of sustainable energy within one of Europe’s main energy and chemical hubs due to its waterfront access and its proximity to the crucial hydrogen pipeline. In addition to supporting green innovation and the larger European decarbonization ambitions, Power2X and Advario are dedicated to developing solutions that are future-proof.

Compared to traditional jet fuel, sustainable aviation fuel reduces lifecycle carbon emissions by 90%, making it essential for lowering CO2 emissions. Beginning in 2030, the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation in Europe requires a greater usage of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), including e-SAF. The hub will make a 40% contribution.
