Port of Salalah brings green cranes into operation

Posted on May 23, 2022

The Port of Salalah, Oman has brought 16 new eco-efficient rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTG) from ZPMC into operation and three new mobile harbour cranes from Liebherr.

The new cranes are set to reduce fuel burn by 20 per cent and they will be fitted with the latest Siemens technology to lift up to 41 tons.

They can be fully monitored remotely and are integrated with the asset digitisation system currently being installed in the terminal to monitor production and efficiency.

In addition, they will have laser anti-collision systems.

“Innovation and improvement are at the heart of our port-centric solutions,” said Mark Hardiman, CEO of the Port of Salalah.

“Our investment in the latest RTGs and mobile harbour cranes demonstrates our long-term commitment to optimise operational efficiencies and cargo handling services while accommodating existing and new trade.”

The contract with ZPMC and Liebherr is a part of a wider investment to expand its future capacity and acquire the latest technology and equipment to support local and international business customers.

The first 12 RTG cranes were delivered at the Port of Salalah last December.
