The Port of Riga completes a transformative infrastructure project, enhancing competitiveness and improving military mobility. This marks a significant leap forward for Latvia’s strategic goals. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Transforming the Port of Riga into a Modern Logistics Hub

The Port of Riga recently completed a comprehensive modernisation initiative aimed at boosting its logistical and strategic capabilities. These upgrades enhance road, rail, and berth infrastructure, supporting military and commercial growth.

The project is part of an EU co-funded scheme, titled “Increasing the dual-use capacity of the transport infrastructure.” By focusing on Kundziņsala, Riga aims to create a digitised logistics hub with automated systems. Improvements include a new overpass, upgraded access points, and expanded industrial areas, which attract new businesses and streamline cargo operations.

Port of Riga Enhances Berth and Traffic Infrastructure

In 2024, the Port of Riga extended the Baltic Container Terminal’s berth by 57.3 meters, enabling it to accommodate two large vessels simultaneously. This upgrade increases handling efficiency and boosts the terminal’s competitiveness.

Additionally, the reconstruction of the road and railway bridge over Sarkandaugava, completed in 2023, improved access to the terminal. A new connecting road between the terminal and Kundziņsala’s parking area further streamlines cargo flow. These upgrades benefit both commercial and military logistics, reducing congestion and environmental impacts.

The project, funded at €12.51 million, was co-financed by CINEA under the CEF Transport Military Mobility Programme. The Port of Riga emerges as a strategic Baltic hub, supporting economic and defence objectives effectively.
