Posted on July 17, 2026

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — As America celebrates 250 years, the American Road & Transportation Builders Association has recognized the Port of Mobile as one of “250 transportation projects that helped build America.”

According to a Port of Mobile news release, “the national recognition highlights transportation projects that have played a significant role in strengthening the economy and connecting American communities, including the Interstate Highway System, the Transcontinental Railroad and the Golden Gate Bridge.”

The port, established in 1928, was one of only a few Alabama transportation projects included on the list, which also included the Bankhead Tunnel and Cochrane-Africatown Bridge.

The Port of Mobile is still among Alabama’s strongest economic areas, providing one in seven jobs and generating more than $415 billion in statewide economic impact since 2019.

Additionally, the Alabama Port Authority and the state have been pouring into the terminals to enhance and improve it.

“With more than $2 billion in capital investments taking place over the last decade, the Alabama
Port Authority continues to invest in the infrastructure, capacity and connectivity that will support economic growth across Alabama for generations to come,” the release said.
