DREDGING works are set to commence at the Port of Bunbury Outer Harbour on Wednesday 26 October and continue for two weeks.
The planned dredging is part of a maintenance program that intends to maximise the depth, safety and efficiency of the channels and berths in Port of Bunbury.
“Dredging works are usually undertaken twice a year at the Port of Bunbury,” Southern Ports said in a statement.
“A trailer suction dredge removes naturally accumulated sand and silt from the shipping channel and outer harbour berths and deposits the material at the ocean spoil ground.”
Southern Ports advised of turbidity expected to result from dredging, which is usually short-lived and localised.
It also expects some odour to be noticeable at times during the process due to decaying sea grass disturbed during dredging.
Southern Ports said it holds a Sea Dumping Permit No. SD2021/4012, issued by the Federal Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment under the Environmental Protection (Sea Dumping) Act 1981, to load for the purposes of dumping and to dump, subject to conditions specified within the Permit.
