It hasn’t happened in more than a decade, but the city says it’s time to dredge the Petoskey Municipal Marina.
The City of Petoskey said the last time the marina was dredged was in 2013.
The project will clean out the entire marina, which is about 2,800 cubic yards.
The goal is to have the water levels between eight and a half and nine feet deep.
“The long-term forecast is that the water levels are going to decrease over the next few years,” said Kendall Klingelsmith, director of Petoskey Parks and Recreation. “I mean it’s impossible to predict, but that’s the typical trend. So, this is overdue and so now we’re going to do it.”
Klingelsmith said the hope is to do the project this fall and winter.
According to Klingelsmith, the project is just under $300,000 dollars.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will be funding half of the project through the Waterways Grant-in-Aid program. The other half comes from the Marina Reserve Fund.
