One of Europe’s largest battery energy storage systems has entered the testing phase⚡
We’ve completed construction of our first large-scale battery energy storage system, which will help balance the grid and lower electricity costs. The system will make better use of renewable electricity produced in the UK, for example by storing excess power until it’s needed.
Known as Iceni, the battery energy storage system’s 170 megapack batteries are now in place alongside the onshore converter station for the Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm near Norfolk, UK. Each is the length of a classic London double-decker bus and weighs as much as five buses combined.
With a capacity equivalent to the electricity consumption of 80,000 UK homes, specialists from Ørsted, Hitachi Energy, Knights Brown, and Tesla have been hard at work delivering this first-of-its-kind setup. Its unique layout shares a National Grid connection point with Hornsea 3, adding to the project’s technical complexity.
