Northstar Marine announces construction of new 600-ton heavy lift derrick barge

Posted on May 6, 2026

Northstar Marine, Inc. has announced the construction of a new heavy lift twin boom derrick barge capable of lifts up to 600 tons. The vessel, which will be known as the NORTHSTAR 600, is currently under construction and scheduled for delivery by the end of Q3 2026.

The NORTHSTAR 600 will be built on an ABS-classed 65′ x 230′ deck barge equipped with a self-elevating spud system and a four-point mooring spread. The twin boom derrick configuration provides the primary lift capacity, while the generous deck space on the opposing end allows a crawler crane to be staged aboard for pre-rigging, load handling, and support operations. This combination gives the vessel a level of operational flexibility that sets it apart from more conventional single-crane platforms.

The barge will operate in all major ports and areas from Maine to Virginia and will be available for heavy lift, salvage, offshore support, and marine construction work throughout the region, serving both private clients and government agencies.

“This is the perfect addition to our company. We see strong demand across the heavy lift and salvage markets, and the NORTHSTAR 600 allows us to pursue work we could not compete for previously,” said Phil Risko, CEO of Northstar Marine.

The NORTHSTAR 600 will join a diverse fleet that includes Offshore Support Vessels, Tugboats, Liftboats, Barges and salvage equipment operating across the East Coast.
