A scheme of maintenance work and repairs is being carried out for three weeks along a stretch of beach in a coastal town.

Work is being carried out at Corton and Gunton in Lowestoft with repairs and maintenance “of coastal protection assets” under way.

Coastal Partnership East – which brings together the coastal management resources and expertise from North Norfolk District Council, Great Yarmouth Borough Council and East Suffolk Council – has appointed the Water Management Alliance (WMA) to carry out “repairs and maintenance of coastal protection assets” at Corton and Gunton.

According to Coastal Partnership East, repair and maintenance work along the coastal defences started on Monday (April 17) and is due to last for about three weeks.

A spokesman for Coastal Partnership East said: “The work is spread along the defences between Bakers Score, Corton and Links Road, Lowestoft.”

With vehicles and equipment accessing the beach via Tramps Alley and/or Links Road, all work being carried out is tide and weather condition dependent.

The spokesman added: “The WMA will be undertaking routine maintenance including promenade and handrail repairs, joint sealant and signage replacement, and sundry other works.

“Access gates at Baker’s Score and Tibbenham’s Score may be closed at certain times during the work and diversions will be clearly signposted.

“The damaged remains of a timber groyne will be removed using the Links Road beach access.

“The access steps below the seaward end of Links Road will have the concrete platform extended.”

The Coastal Partnership East spokesman added: “We will work hard to keep any inconvenience to a minimum and ask the public to please take note of the contractor’s signage when work is happening.

“This work will improve public safety and is an important part of the council’s commitment to ensure that the coastal assets they are responsible for are working effectively and are safe for the public.”
