New Timeline Revealed for Avalon and Stone Harbor Beach Replenishment

Posted on July 1, 2026

At the heart of the summer season at the Jersey Shore are the world-famous beaches that run along the Atlantic Ocean. From Asbury Park to Cape May, thousands of visitors between Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend come to the coastal communities for the beaches.

This is why it was important when New Jersey Congressman Jeff Van Drew secured $99 million of emergency funding for beach replenishment while the federal government finds a permanent solution to South Jersey’s beach erosion.

But the start of the summer season came to the Jersey Shore while many Coastal Communities still waited for their turn on the beach replenishment schedule. We now know when the beaches of Seven Mile Island will get their turn.

When Will Stone Harbor and Avalon Beaches Get Attention?

The beach replenishment project for Sea Isle City is finishing up this month, so as the calendar changes from June to July, that means the Department of Environmental Protection will now turn their attention south.

The fully federally funded beach replenishment project will pump 1.4 million cubic yards of sand onto the Seven Mile Island Beaches. The popular South Jersey island has not received any federally funded beach replenishment projects since 2023, which means the island has almost 3 years of beach erosion.

Avalon will start to see beach replenishment starting in mid-August, and Stone Harbor beaches will see work begin in mid-October.  According to reports, the goal is to have the Avalon beach replenishment project finished before the end of September, and Stone Harbor is projected to be completed by November 9th.

The Coastal Trust Fund Act (H.R.7459) has still not come up for vote in the US House of Representatives, so the current beach replenishment project is part of a three-year cycle with the $99 million of emergency funding. The new legislation would create a permanent schedule for Jersey Shore Beach Replenishment beyond 2028.
