The National Association of Waterfront Employers (NAWE) has issued the following statement in response to President Donald J. Trump designating Federal Maritime Commissioner Louis E. Sola as Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission. Sola replaces FMC Chairman Daniel Maffei who was designated FMC Chairman by President Joe Biden in March of 2021.

“Chairman Maffei’s tireless dedication and forward-thinking leadership have left a considerable mark on the maritime industry,” said Carl W. Bentzel, President of NAWE. “From his steadfast commitment to addressing supply chain challenges and efforts implementing the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2022, to his unwavering support for fair and efficient port operations, Dan has consistently championed the needs of the maritime sector. As a colleague and friend, I thank him for his partnership and service, and I wish him continued success in his role as Commissioner.”

NAWE also congratulates Commissioner Louis E. Sola as he takes on this vital leadership role at the FMC. Commissioner Sola brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the complexities facing the maritime industry.

“Louis Sola’s proven track record, passion for maritime innovation, and commitment to fostering collaboration make him an outstanding choice to lead the FMC into its next chapter,” Bentzel continued. “As both a friend and an admired colleague, I look forward to working closely with Chairman Sola to address the challenges ahead and advance the goals of the maritime community. Together, we can build on the solid foundation set by Chairman Maffei and drive meaningful progress for the industry and the nation.”

NAWE remains committed to supporting the Federal Maritime Commission’s vital work in promoting fair competition, ensuring supply chain resilience, and strengthening the maritime transportation system.
