The disposal of Mobile Bay dredging spoils has pitted local environmental advocates and economic development interests against one another, but the issue is also creating separation among Alabama’s elected delegation in Washington, D.C.
The local watchdog group Mobile Baykeeper has been highly effective in earning political capital with state and federal lawmakers to push the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers away from “mud dumping,” a local term coined to describe the process of taking sediment excavated from the local shipping channel and spraying it in separate areas of the bay — a process known as “thin-layer placement.”
