European engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor MT Group has secured a construction contract from the Cobra IS / Sener consortium for delivery of Balance of Plant (BoP) infrastructure at the German LNG Terminal. Located in Brunsbüttel, it is of Europe’s most significant energy-security projects. Project completion is scheduled for 2027.
The onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal is being developed by German LNG Terminal GmbH, a joint venture backed by Germany’s KfW (50%), Gasunie (40%), and RWE (10%).
Located on the River Elbe near the North Sea, the terminal is designed with an initial regasification capacity of approximately 353 bcf (10 bcm) per year, enabling substantial volumes of imported LNG to be converted back to gaseous form and delivered into Germany’s transmission network.
The facility will include two full-containment LNG storage tanks; LNG unloading and marine infrastructure; regasification facilities; and gas export connections into the German transmission system.
Approximately 317 bcf (9 bcm) per year of terminal capacity has already been contracted under long-term agreements, with the remaining capacity reserved for shorter-term market offerings.
