MDL evaluates mega shipyard project in Maharashtra to boost naval capacity

Posted on May 27, 2026

Mazagon Dock Ltd (MDL) is currently assessing plans to establish a mega shipyard in Maharashtra, as stated by the company’s chairman.

MDL has a strong track record, having successfully executed warship and submarine projects worth ₹84,000 crore from its existing Mumbai yard over the past fifteen years. This proposed mega shipyard aims to enhance MDL’s capacity to manage larger and more complex naval construction projects, thereby supporting India’s maritime defense requirements. The evaluation aligns with the Indian government’s “Make in India” initiative and defense self-reliance policies, positioning MDL to potentially capture a larger share of future naval contracts.

It is important to note that this evaluation is still in its early stages, with no specific financial commitments or implementation timelines disclosed. However, a new mega shipyard in Maharashtra could lead to increased employment and industrial activity in the region, although investment figures and completion dates have not been provided.
