Maritime union urges FG to prioritise dredging of ports

Posted on October 18, 2022

The President, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju has advised the federal government to prioritize the dredging of Calabar, Warri and Port-Harcourt ports to forestall the flooding along the Lokoja axis in Kogi State.

Comrade Adeyanju gave the advice when he paid a visit to the office of the Minister of Transportation, Muazu Sambo on Friday.

Dredging the 3 ports would allow for a more acceptable flow of water into the Lokoja axis, he said.

According to the union leader, another major issue that informed the visit was the alleged refusal by International Oil Companies (IOCs) to obey Marine Notice 104 of 2020 and Extant Stevedoring Regulations, which clearly spells out proper operations in maritime domains and non-payment of pensions due aged seamen which is a clear violation of their rights in retirement.

The Minister of Transportation, Muazu Sambo who noted that his tenure was a short one, solicited the support of the union and promised to look into the issues raised.
