Mapusa: The Mapusa municipal council has approached the North Goa collector to issue a directive to Water Resources Department to carry out desilting work of major nullahs in Mapusa. The council has also requested the collector to also issue directives to PWD for carrying out cleaning of drains along major district roads in Mapusa.
Expressing concern over the slow pace of work being executed by the Water Resource Department, Mapusa municipality has written a letter to North Goa collector informing that till date only one nullah work i.e. Ganganagar Khorlim via Usapkar shop upto Bodgeshwar temple has been taken up by WRD.
It may be recalled that Mapusa Municipal Council on April 8 had approached the North Goa collector to issue a directive under Section 33 of National Disaster Management Act 2005 for dredging of Mapusa Tar River and also for clearing off debris dumped at Gaunswaddo along the river bank before the onset of the monsoon as a remedial measure.
Accordingly the collector has issued a directive to carry out necessary desilting activities along the Mapusa river bank on priority before the onset of the monsoon in order to avoid any untoward incident.
The chief officer of Mapusa Municipal Council Clen Madeira said, “We have around 13 major nullahs in the town and if these nullahs are not desilted in time we could have problems during the monsoon, however the WRD has started work and till date work is going on in one nullah by using a JCB which is not sufficient to complete the work on time”.
Meanwhile the council has requested the North Goa collector to issue directives to the PWD road section to carry out the desilting work of drains along MDRs in Mapusa jurisdiction prior to the monsoon.
“Every year we request the PWD for carrying out desilting of drains before the monsoon however they have failed in maintaining and cleaning the drains. If timely action is not taken we may see flooding during the monsoon” said Madeira.
