Manistee City Council to consider $201K dredging damage settlement

MANISTEE — The city of Manistee could come to a settlement agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice for damage done to the Riverwalk and net shed during a dredging operation.

During its regular meeting Tuesday, Manistee City Council will consider ratifying a settlement agreement that would pay the city $201,514.93 and resolve all claims related to the incident without further litigation.

A July 2, 2024, dredging operation managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and carried out by King Company to improve river navigation resulted in damage to the Riverwalk and caused extensive riverbank erosion.

A June 30 memo from city manager Bill Gambill to the council said the settlement amount incorporates all costs associated with repairing the

Riverwalk, removing and stabilizing the net shed after the incident and the engineer’s estimated cost to relocate and reattach the net shed to its original location.

“Approval of the agreement will fully resolve the city’s claim without the need for further litigation,” Gambill said in the memo.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers at city hall, 70 Maple St.

Also during the meeting, council members will consider approving a parcel split at 170 Glocheski Drive.

According to the meeting agenda, MRK Investments would like to split the parcel into a 1-acre parcel and a 3-acre parcel.

“The parcels meet the zoning requirements, and the city assessor has confirmed that the split is legal and allowable,” the agenda said in part. “The planning commission reviewed the split and recommended approval at their June 4, 2026, meeting.”

MRK operates a state-licensed cannabis grow facility on the property.
