Maine DOT seeks USACE permit for proposed project work in Trenton, Maine

Posted on August 29, 2022

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District received a permit application to conduct work in waters of the United States from the Maine Department of Transportation for proposed work in an unnamed stream in Trenton, Maine.

The proposed work involves placing temporary and permanent fill in freshwater wetlands and below the ordinary high-water mark of the stream to allow the contractor to construct the Acadia Gateway Center welcome center building and associated parking, infrastructure and electric vehicle charging stations. The project would result in approximately 2.03 acres of permanent impact and 0.196 acre of temporary impact to waters of the United States. This project is part of a three-phase development which began construction in 2007 and previously filled 1.7 acre of wetlands.

Permanent impacts to wetlands and streams would total 3.73 acres. Maine DOT has preserved a parcel adjacent to the existing project to mitigate for impacts to waters of the United States. The project would expand into up to 4 acres of the preserved area. To offset unavoidable impacts to both the currently preserved area and the additional area of impact, the applicant proposes to purchase 0.8 credits from the Maine Natural Resource Conservation Fund.

USACE is soliciting comments from members of the public; federal, state and local agencies; American Indian Tribes; and other interested parties to consider and evaluate the impacts of this
proposed activity. The public notice with more detailed information is available for review on the District website at https://www.nae.usace.army.mil/Missions/PublicNotices, file # NAE-2006-03036. Public comments on this proposed work should be forwarded no later than Sept. 7, 2022, to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, Attn: Jana Jacobson, Regulatory Division, 696 Virginia Road, Concord, MA 01742 or by email to jana.l.jacobson@usace.army.mil. Please reference file # NAE-2006-03036.
