Liquid Wind plans second electrofuel plant in Sweden

Posted on June 30, 2022

Swedish electrofuel development firm Liquid Wind on Monday unveiled plans for its second electrofuel facility, which will be located in the city of Sundsvall, northeastern Sweden, and will produce eMethanol for the shipping industry.

The project, called FlagshipTWO, will be hosted by Sundsvall Energi at its Korstaverket site for district heating and electricity production. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from this energy plant will be captured and the biogenic fraction of them will be combined with renewable hydrogen to produce eMethanol, while the fossil fraction will be processed for long-term storage.

The electrofuel facility will have a capacity of 100,000 tonnes, double the capacity of the FlagshipONE project in Ornskoldsvik, which in early 2022 attracted Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) as an investor.

Investment decision for FlagshipTWO is targetted for late 2023. Production could start after a construction period of about two years, by the end of 2025 or early 2026.

The project is in line with Sundsvall’s goal of being climate neutral by 2030.
