Land reclamation begins in Girifushi military island

Posted on June 24, 2026

The land reclamation and harbor upgrade project for Kaafu Girifushi, the military training base, was officially inaugurated yesterday.

Defence Minister Hassan Rasheed launched the project during a ceremony held at the Girifushi Training Centre. The project has been contracted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

Under the first phase of the project, 13.3 hectares of land will be reclaimed and added to the existing 5.7-hectare island. This expansion will increase the area available for military training. The project also includes the installation of rock boulder revetments for coastal protection and the construction of breakwaters to prevent erosion.

According to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the project will feature the development of a modern 300-meter small arms firing range, replacing the current 100-meter range.

The MNDF stated that this project will expand the space and resources necessary to enhance the skills and operational capabilities of military personnel.

The development will also include infrastructure for the Officer Training Wing and the NCO Academy, as well as upgraded accommodation and support systems for both students and instructors.
