You may have noticed some activities as you drove across the Bonnet Carre Spillway. It’s home to the LaBranche Marsh, which in recent years has deteriorated into open water. CPRA and NRCS have partnered together to restore almost 1,500 acres of marsh, over 3 work cells. A job that big requires big equipment.
The Robert M. White is a 270ft dredge with a 30 inch output pipe. It will be dredging borrow material to fill the containment dikes, for rebuilding invaluable estuarian marsh. The plan also includes a series of tidal ponds and creeks that will provide habitat for fish and migratory birds.
Once restored the marsh will add storm surge protection to I-10 and critical piece of infrastructure, for pre-storm evacuations and post-storm recovery.
