K’pada officials dredge river to supply water

Posted on April 10, 2024

Kendrapada: To ensure water supply to the residents of Kendrapada municipality, officials have undertaken dredging of river Luna, which has become dry, at Kalapada.

Raman Kumar Dash, assistant engineer of public health department (PHD), Kendrapada, said, “We dredged the river up to 20 feet deep, one kilometre long and 30 feet wide to collect water.”

Dash explained that lack of de-silting in previous years had led to sand and mud accumulation, necessitating the dredging process.

The initiative now allows for the pumping of 1.80 lakh litres of water from the river daily for 16 hours, meeting the drinking water needs of 75,000 residents.

Sarita Sahoo, the chairperson of Kendrapada municipality, acknowledged the water crisis faced by Kendrapada town during summers when the river Luna dries up. “This year, the officials successfully addressed the drinking water shortage through dredging of the river,” said Sahoo.
