Konecranes, a provider of smart port solutions, has agreed a deal with South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) to supply three rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) to Wando Welch Terminal, located at the Port of Charleston.
The new Konecranes machines, which will each be equipped with hybrid power packs for more eco-efficient operations, are expected to support the continued growth of SCPA.
2018 was the strongest year in the history of the port authority, which enjoyed a 6% rise in container volume across its terminal locations in Charleston, Georgetown, Greer and Dillon.

The hybrid RTGs from Konecranes will have a lithium-ion battery pack and advanced battery management system that monitors the charge level and general health of the batteries.
In addition to this, Konecranes will be able to monitor the status of this system via its TRUCONNECT remote connection.
Jussi Suhonen, Sales Director Americas for Konecranes Port Solutions, made a statement: “These hybrid RTGs mark a new era in SCPA’s pursuit of eco-efficiency.
“At Konecranes we are constantly pushing battery technology and electrification forward to make our container handling equipment more eco-efficient without compromising crane performance in any way.”

The RTGs will have a lifting capacity of 50 tons and be equipped with Konecranes’ active load control system, eliminating the danger of container sway.
The machines will also be supported by a number of advanced features, including auto-steering and truck lift prevention.
