Keelan calls for dredging of Castletown River in Dundalk

The Fianna Fáil councillor says the river has not be dredged since the Port Authority was abolished

A Louth councillor has called on the local authority to work with the various State agencies involved, to dredge the Castletown River in Dundalk.

Fianna Fáil’s Conor Keelan made a submission on the issue to its new Climate Action Plan.

He says with Louth County Council taking ownership of Dundalk Port from Dublin Port, it has a responsibility to pursue the matter as he claims it’s not been dredged since the Dundalk Port Company was abolished.

Dundalk Bay is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is an important area for shellfish, wetland birds and a range of marine and coastal habitats including vegetated shingle and saltmarsh, but Cllr Keelan doesn’t believe that will prevent the dredging:
