Crowley VP of Global Government Relations Clay Heil testifies about Jones Act waiver
The Jones Act underpins a strong, secure nation by supporting American jobs, U.S. shipbuilding and the supply chains that connect our communities. It ensures our nation’s economic resilience and national security come first, especially when it matters most.
The current waiver damages that foundation. It has not increased fuel supply or reduced costs. Instead, it shifts cargo away from U.S.-flag vessels and American crews – including to a China-owned vessel recently – while weakening the long-term business case for the domestic capacity our nation depends on in times of need. Today, our Vice President of Global Government Relations Clay Heil testified to that before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Coast Guard, Maritime and Fisheries on the critical role the Jones Act plays in strengthening America’s domestic supply chain.
The Jones Act supports U.S. mariners, shipbuilding and repair, and the dedicated trade lanes that deliver consistent, reliable service to communities across the country, from remote villages in Western Alaska to Puerto Rico.
“At the very moment the Administration and Congress are calling for more U.S.-flag vessels, more American mariners, and more shipyard capacity, the waiver invites foreign-flag vessels into domestic trades and weakens the market certainty needed to build that capacity,” said Heil.
We’re committed to working with the Administration, Congress and industry partners to strengthen America’s blue economy, support coastal communities, and ensure the U.S. remains a strong maritime nation.
