JNPA announces 50% ground rent relief for import containers

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has announced a 50 per cent reimbursement of ground rent on import-laden containers accruing charges beyond eight days, providing relief to importers affected by a shortage of trailer drivers during April-May 2026.

The concession applies to import containers discharged on or after May 1, 2026, and removed from port terminals by June 20, 2026.

According to a trade notice issued by JNPA, the shortage of trailer drivers hampered timely evacuation of containers by Container Freight Stations (CFSs) and Direct Port Delivery (DPD) importers, resulting in inventory build-up and prolonged dwell times inside port terminals.

Under the relief measure, eligible importers will receive reimbursement of 50 per cent of the ground rent paid from the ninth day of container landing until removal.

The scheme covers import-laden containers destined for CFSs or DPD facilities by road, unloaded from vessels on or after 7 am on May 1, 2026, and gated out before midnight on June 20, 2026. Containers landed after midnight on June 12, 2026, will not qualify for the benefit.

“Importers seeking reimbursement must submit ground rent payment invoices, delivery order copies, container details and bank account information to JNPA’s Finance Department for verification. Upon approval, the reimbursement amount will be credited directly to the importer,” it said.

The port authority said the measure was approved by the competent authority to mitigate hardships faced by trade stakeholders due to operational disruptions.
