Jan De Nul: Export cables Fengmiao I offshore wind farm ready for grid connection

This month, we successfully completed the installation of two subsea high-voltage export cables for the Fengmiao I offshore wind farm in Taiwan. Using our cable-laying vessel Willem de Vlamingh, we pulled the cables into the offshore substation. In the future, this connection will enable the electricity generated by the wind farm to be transmitted safely and efficiently to the onshore grid.

During an earlier phase of the project, we loaded, installed and buried the two export cables – measuring 45 and 44 kilometres respectively and weighing more than 8,000 tonnes combined – in the seabed using our trencher PT-1.

We have now completed the final phase of the project. With our cable-laying vessel Willem de Vlamingh, we recovered the cable ends from the seabed, positioned them at their final location and cut them to the required length. We then pulled the cables, together with the cable protection system, into the jacket of the offshore substation. Finally, our trencher PT-1 reburied the repositioned cable sections to ensure long-term protection.

The Fengmiao I offshore wind farm has a capacity of 500 MW, enough to supply electricity to around half a million households. It forms part of the larger Fengmiao project, which will have a total installed capacity of 1,800 MW. The site is located approximately 35 kilometres off the coast of Taichung.
