J.F. Brennan crews busy on St. Louis River

Posted on July 12, 2022

J.F. Brennan Company, Inc. has been busy lately working on the sediment cleanup projects in Minnesota.

“Last week, I was able to visit four different projects we have going or will be starting in the St. Louis River in Minnesota,” said Andrew Timmis, J.F. Brennan Company, Inc. Director of Business Development – Environmental Group.

“The scopes include mechanical and hydraulic dredging, amphibious mechanical and hydraulic dredging, capping using our patented Broadcast Capping System, including amended caps using GAC, mechanical placement of caps, dewatering using Geotubes and mechanical dewatering and stabilization using our sediment processing system,” added Timmis.

Cleanup at Munger Landing includes dredging approximately 100,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment, disposing of the sediment at a certified landfill, covering the dredged area with clean sediment, and re-introducing vegetation.

Due to a long history of industrial pollution, the site is contaminated with lead, nickel, zinc, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and dioxins/furans.

These pollutants have contributed to warnings about fish consumption in the area, as well as beach closings, potential harmful contact to humans, loss of fish and wildlife habitat, and harmful impacts to aquatic insects and vegetation in the environment.
