IMCA Awards: Showcasing inspirational Safety and Sustainability best-practice

Showcasing positive, inspirational, and impactful initiatives in Safety and Environmental Sustainability from across its membership base, the winners of IMCA’s Awards 2022 will be announced at our forthcoming Safety Seminar which takes place in Amsterdam on 6 June 2023.

• ADNOC – Smart Safety Vessels – Implementing next-generation AI systems on more than 80 offshore vessels operating across six ports in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
• Global Gases – Behavioural Safety campaign – A series of tools, campaigns, competitions, and communication activity to support health and safety, notably behavioural safety, across the organisation.
• MMA Offshore – T365 Leadership Engagement Programme – A new programme which underpins a belief that an incident free workplace is possible through understanding, guidance, and tools.
• TechnipFMC – FOCOS – A company-wide safety programme which manages risk, reduces exposure, and improves organisational culture through operational improvement.
• Transocean – Worksight Assurance & Verification – A digital and behaviour-based safety observation, assurance, and verification programme.

Environmental Sustainability:

• Boskalis – Solent Seagrass Restoration – Working with the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to undertake a seagrass restoration project within the Solent, off the southern coast of the UK.
• Bumi Armada – Improving its ESG performance – An impressive “Sustainability Philosophy” which outlines overarching ESG commitments and its application across day-to-day operations.
• Heerema – Developing a silent piling methodology – Collaborating with the University of Dundee to significantly reduce or eliminate underwater noise pollution from pile-driving operations.
• P&O Maritime and Logistics – Mangrove Reforestation in Mozambique – Partnering with Tree Nation to support mangrove estuaries by linking safety reporting to the planting of trees.
• Subsea7 – Blue Ocean Research Alliance – Working with the National Oceanography Centre to enable greater access to the ocean for scientific research.

Selecting a shortlist, yet alone picking winners, was a challenge as all entries were worthy of recognition. IMCA’s Safety Seminar brings the industry together to explore the major safety issues facing the offshore sector, notably how we can recruit and retain the right people while ensuring effective onboarding and retention. The one-day seminar takes place at the Steigenberger Airport Hotel, Schiphol, Amsterdam on Tuesday 6 June 2023.

Featuring presentations, workshops and Q&A sessions, the Seminar includes speakers from Danish Maritime Accident Investigation Board, Equinor, MMA Offshore, P&O Maritime Logistics, Caledonia Competence, Fugro, TechnipFMC, Heerema Marine Contractors and Subsea7. It will also welcome Iain Grainger for his first public-speaking engagement in his new role as CEO at IMCA.

IMCA Awards 2022: Safety

• ADNOC ­– Safety Smart Vessels – ADNOC’s HSE Team designed, engineered, installed, and implemented next-generation AI systems on more than 80 offshore vessels operating across six ports in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Interacting with onboard CCTV systems and deploying new sensors, trip wires and intelligent video analytics, ADNOC’s Safety Smart Vessels offer real-time surveillance and enhanced operational efficiency, as well as powerful reporting. The system triggered more than 15,000 alerts on PPE violations, surveillance events, incidents, swell levels, man overboard, slips and falls, unsafe acts, and unsafe conditions.

• MMA Offshore – T365 Leadership Engagement Programme – To improve engagement at MMA Offshore and build on their strong culture of operational safety, MMA has designed, developed, and implemented a new leadership engagement programme. The T365 Leadership Engagement Programme provides clear guidance, training, and visible tracking mechanisms to support MMA’s safety leadership expectations while underpinning MMA’s T365 philosophy – a shared belief that an incident free workplace is possible through understanding, guidance, and tools.

• Global Gases Group – Behavioural Safety campaign – A series of tools, campaigns, competitions, and communication activity to support health and safety, notably behavioural safety, across the organisation. The campaign, which runs throughout 2023, will lead to the implementation of additional safety performance, monitoring and measurement at Global Gases, and feeds into their commitment to developing team skills as well as their focus on safety and quality.

• TechnipFMC – FOCOS – A company-wide safety programme which manages risk, reduces exposure, and improves organisational culture through operational improvement. Working with the leadership team and team members, the programme is guided by TechnipFMC values. Called FOCOS – FOrmação de COmportamento Seguro whioch broadly translates as, “training in safe behaviours” – the programme, which is based on behavioural observation and technical checks, aims to understand interactions between employees and the workplace environment which can lead to both serious and non-serious injury, while introducing new technology or approaches to mitigate risk.

• Transocean – Worksight Assurance and Verification – In 2022, Transocean launched a new digital behaviour-based safety observation, assurance, and verification programme, Worksight. Using an application on portable electronic devices to enable a mobile observation, assurance, and verification process, it provides near real-time data collection. This insight informs leadership of the effectiveness of a rig’s safe working practices while promoting safety awareness in the workplace. As of the end of 2022, more than 1.14 million people had been engaged or positively impacted by the programme.

IMCA Awards 2022: Environmental Sustainability

• Boskalis – Solent Seagrass Restoration – Over the last two years, Boskalis Westminster has been working with the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to undertake a seagrass restoration project within the Solent – a stretch of sea off the southern coast of the UK. Marine wildlife experts collect and plant seagrass seeds to help restore the seagrass habitat. The project is being closely monitored so the lessons learned can influence the replication of the technique at scale within the Solent region and beyond. The Solent Seagrass Restoration Project demonstrates how Boskalis works with partners to actively address climate change and its consequences and contributes to advancing best practices for climate action in the maritime and dredging sector.

• Bumi Armada – Improving its ESG performance – Bumi Armada has developed a “Sustainability Philosophy” which outlines the group’s overarching ESG commitments and its application across their day-to-day operations. Aiming to minimise operational impact, safeguard all their stakeholders, and provide corporate accountability, the approach has enabled the group to meet its vision and mission to implement practical sustainable solutions which can create a difference to the environment and society.

• Heerema – Developing a silent piling methodology – Heerema Marine Contractors and the University of Dundee’s School of Science and Engineering have collaborated to significantly reduce or eliminate underwater noise pollution from pile-driving operations. Traditional operations, including for wind turbine installation and oil and gas facilities, generate considerable noise pollution. The direct hearing damage and disruption to communication and navigation signals that noise pollution causes in marine life can affect migratory patterns and cause long-term stress. Heerema’s solution to this challenge is a push-in pile design that replaces a single open tubular pile with a cluster of four smaller diameter open tubular piles. This eliminates noise pollution as it requires no pile-driving or hammering.

• P&O Maritime and Logistics – Mangrove Reforestation in Mozambique – In 2022, P&O Maritime and Logistics partnered with Tree Nation, a global non-profit organisation and one of the world’s largest reforestation organisations, to support mangrove estuaries in Mozambique. Adopting an innovative approach linking behavioural safety with environmental degradation, teams were incentivised to record safety observations with a tree planted for every report. This helped encourage and reinforce safe behaviours while contributing to the vital restoration of the local mangrove ecosystem.

• Subsea7 – Blue Ocean Research Alliance – Bringing together the offshore industry and the research community to increase access to the ocean for scientific research is the goal of the Blue Ocean Research Alliance, backed by Subsea7 and the National Oceanography Centre. Ocean observations generate the data to understand our changing seas, allow for global assessments of ocean health, and feed into the modelling of future conditions. Despite technological advances, major knowledge gaps remain relating to biology, ecology, and biogeochemistry – especially in deeper waters. Thanks to sensor technology attached to a Subsea7 ROV, as well as insight from acoustic, geotechnical, habitat mapping and sampling projects, the alliance is measuring the impact of climate change on our oceans, ecosystems, and biodiversity.
