The Land and Survey Department seized heavy machinery used in illegal sand dredging activities at Kg Bawang, here, recently.

Its Director Datuk Bernard Liew Chau Min said a team of enforcement units raided the site on March 16 after receiving information and intelligence from the Pitas Land Office.

“The entrepreneurs involved in dredging and taking sand in the river do not have any permission and licence to carry out such activities on the site.

“During the raid, our enforcement team seized one unit of Hitachi UH200 excavator and a 10-ton truck.

“No arrests were made during the operation because the workers involved managed to escape,” he said.

“We have made a police report about the raid and seizure. An investigation paper would be opened as soon as all the information that needs to be obtained by the Investigation Unit of the Enforcement Division and appropriate actions will be implemented in accordance with the provisions in the Sabah Land Ordinance, Chapter 68.

“The Department takes matters like this seriously and the enforcement team will continue to monitor illegal land/sand/stone mining activities throughout Sabah.

“Not only during weekdays but also on weekends and public holidays. We will not hesitate to take action against any entrepreneur who is found to be violating the law,” he added.
